What it is

What is a Medicare Annual Wellness Visit?

The Annual Wellness Visit is a yearly prevention visit covered by Medicare Part B. Your provider reviews your health history and medicines, measures your blood pressure, height and weight, checks memory and mood, and creates a personalized plan for the screenings and vaccines you need over the next several years.

The Annual Wellness Visit is not a head-to-toe physical exam. Original Medicare covers it once every 12 months with no cost to you when your provider accepts Medicare assignment. If a health problem is checked or treated during the same visit, that part may have a cost, and your provider will explain it.

  • Health risk review and medicine review
  • Blood pressure, height and weight
  • Memory and mood checks
  • A written screening and prevention schedule

Making the most of your Medicare benefits

Medicare Part B covers many preventive services, including the Annual Wellness Visit and screenings for conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. A primary care provider who knows your history helps you use those benefits and keeps your care coordinated as you see specialists and take more medicines.

What to bring to your Medicare visit

  • Your red, white and blue Medicare card
  • Any Medicare Advantage, supplement (Medigap) or Part D card
  • A photo ID
  • All of your medicine bottles or a full list, including vitamins and supplements
  • The names of your other doctors and specialists

Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage

With Original Medicare, you can see any provider who accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans often use provider networks, so call (903) 230-9811 with your plan card to confirm the clinic is in your network before your visit.

Medicines and Part D

Prescription drug coverage comes from a Medicare Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage. Your provider reviews your medicines at each visit and can help find options if a medicine is not covered or is too costly.

Preventive screenings Medicare covers

Depending on your health and risk, Medicare covers screenings such as diabetes tests, cardiovascular blood tests, colorectal cancer screening and mammograms. Your Annual Wellness Visit plan shows which ones are due.
